:: greetings from free press ::

hello all! i've been working hard catching up with all the texts, and you'll see many new books in the free press library below - there are still quite a few to go, and of course the deadline for adding your own text isn't until october 15. i've just shipped a copy of the library to botkyrka konsthalle in stockholm, where free press will be part of an exhibition of artist books called laybrint (labyrinth) later this fall.

on the last weekend of the show, we'll be distributing the books from the free press library in the bookstores of göteborg, and you're invited. meet up at 10 am on saturday october 14 on the steps in front of valand academy at 50 vasagatan, and we'll head out together to place copies of the book on the shelves of your favorite bookstores.

:: new and upcoming free press publications ::

new in the free press library:

free press 014: a different story, the british working class novel between 1914 and 1939 by eddie willson. a dissertation exploring aspects of the british working class novel between 1914 and 1939. a key aspect of the argument presented is that, contrary to conventional critical wisdom, there is nothing natural or inevitable about the working class novel's relationship with the realist form. the dissertation presents a clear case for the reassessment of these texts as sophisticated literary works, rather than as mere social documents.

free press 015: free choice, manifestos, statements & declarations. a collection of manifestos and statements by vitorrio algonquin, haley west, xtine hanson, jasmine zimmerman, cleeland, babel, the global citizens network, jeremy hight, thomas curran, erik robert johnson & jerome mast grand.

free press 016: writing portfolio 2005-2006 by ivana ng. this anthology of written work demonstrates ivana’s growth and breadth of experience in journalism and arts criticism. these writing clips have been compiled from her work for allaboutjazz-newyork, harmonium music, high 5 teen reviewers and critics (trac), the new victory theater, the nyu spectrum, and the stuyvesant spectator.

free press 017: living anarchy: an anarchist notebook by jeff shantz. this collection brings together a variety of recent writings from a longtime anarchist. topics covered include perspective on anarchist theory, participant accounts of direct actions and anarchist projects as well as writings on literature, marriage, state repression and borders.

free press 019: free choice: poems, stories, memories. a collection of narratives, memoirs, and poetry by keg de souza, gettarr, b. marie laviolette, james cleeland/nibru zoor, gosia wlodarczak, kim nuzzo, ruby xuequn pan, alanna simone, bruno bran.

free press 020: det är dags att välja sida nu; anteckningar från någon annan stans by torkel stål.

free press 021: monkey chased the weasel by tara gilbee, this work explores mantric and paranoic thought in reference to political de-personalisation through language. there is a regularity here and simple syncopy that has a small glitch, hardly detectable to the eye and perhaps escaping the auditory observation. it is the hiccup that is human, within systems that seemingly forget humanity, creating distances further from reality in purposeless exercises of political manouver. the absurdity of terms such as collateral damage, risk aversion etc ..... surfacing in the everday subsuming and disabling mental capacities. try this at home: a> cut and paste this text repeatively into a word document, in the edit section find the tool speech, go to 'start speaking' click and listen, can you pick the glitch. its not that the computer does not recognise equal but that is an added concept. b> read the words repeatively from the screen or a sheet of paper, preferably in a monotone voice, can you keep up with the monotony or do your thoughts leap and flail around, then you loose your place. c> write the statement down on a piece of paper, then try and type it looking back and forward or even place it in front of you, try to type it without making one typing error, if you do leave them in and see how the document comes out. then email me your typed piece (as a jpeg) mistakes and all.

free press 022: tinctured tandems by natasha mischenko, ivana ng, and aglika darakchieva. a tandem story is a story of any length that is written by more than one person. usually, they are written by two people alternating paragraphs, but they may be written by any number of people. tandem fiction is not as serious as novel writing because of the difficulties (in terms of plot) that occur in writing them. 'tinctured tandems' is an anthology of two short stories. these stories are the first completed fictional works done by members of the writers of tandem fiction, a club at stuyvesant high school in new york city.

free press 023: sketch book by heather lewis. collection of written sketches about experiences of travel mostly. very descriptive, about sensation, the journey, roads, cars, plane trips etc.

free press 024: hyman_victor_ged by elliott malkin. hyman_victor.ged is a gedcom file containing information about the life of my late great-grandfather hyman victor, a jewish carpenter who immigrated to the united states from the former russian empire in 1913. gedcom is a digital file format developed by the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints in the 1980's for the storage and distribution of family history data. a copy of hyman_victor.ged has been uploaded to familysearch.org. for more information, visit: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/home/faq/frameset_faq.asp?faq=faq_library.asp

free press 025: the hate manifesto by mark shepherd and krista connerly. this text is the culmination of a summer long email exchange between artists mark shepherd and krista connerly. it is meant to be humorous, repetitive, and somewhat spontaneous in spirit. enjoy! please take, borrow, steal, append all you like as we are certain we all share, -- ahem -- hoard in the hate!

free press 026: poetry and the imagination by alegra marcel bartzat. the relationship between poetry and the imagination goes beyond individual writer and creation. the definition of a language and therefore of a culture is blown this way and that way by the whispers between poet and poetry.

lots more books on the way! don't forget the deadline to add your own text is october 15.

see all the published books here: http://freewords.org/freepress/pool/book/

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:: final deadline to add your text october 15 ::

october 15 is the last day to add your text to this round of the free press project. while we do expect to keep publishing books in the future, there's no saying when, so if you'd like a book of your own, send in your text now.

:: how to get copies of free press books ::

many people have asked how to get their own copies of free press books. people keep trying to buy them from the library at röda sten! but the best way is to order one from the free press book printer, lulu. what you pay is simply the printing and shipping cost, just the same as free press does - no money goes to free press or the writers. the books are as free as we can make them.

you can find a link to get a printed copy on the page for each book, or visit the free press lulu page to see them all:

http://lulu.com/freepress

and as always, pdf versions of the book can be downloaded free -- download links are on each book page.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:: add a word ::

you can contribute as little as a single word to free press. all the words collected through the site and gallery will be added to the ever-growing book, free words, forever and will be added to the wall of words at röda sten (see the wall at http://freewords.org/freepress/info/pictures ). the first edition of free words, forever is the inaugural volume of the free press library. the book is a sequel to free words ( http://freewords.org ) and is a list created by a community of visitors to the free words & free press sites from 2003 to the present. add your word today.
