FREE BIENNIAL: PROJECTS: INTERNATIONAL ADAPTER
INTERNATIONAL ADAPTER

GRAHAM PARKER

'International Adapter' involves me finding and photographing the graffiti tag nearest to my head in any new room I sleep in. I then turn these into brass and wood rubber stamps which I take to the next city I am in and re-deploy there. It's an ongoing series of small transactions which are related to the tiny rituals occurring millions of times daily - where people find a small human scale way of making their own intimate map of the city. As the lower cost of international travel and the concurrent ecstacy of global communications continue apace, these localised and intimate points of presence are a small delinquent marking of this process for an individual.

One of the stamps was based on a tag found on the small block at the North West of the intersection of Broadway and Canal Street. I am proposing that each day in April I will use that stamp to tag the block I am sleeping in in whatever city I am in at that time (my current travel plans include Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and New York). The illustration attached is of a tag from the Mitte area of Berlin. I will not identify the NY tag I will be using, but have attached a map of the part of Manchester I live in, should anyone ever be here and believe they can identify the mark.

HOW TO LOCATE

Wander the small block at the intersection of Broadway and Canal Street and speculate about which tag the artist is using. If desired, use the map provided to visit the area around the artists home in Manchester, Englsnd and attempt to indentify the tag. Alternatively, keep an eye out for the tag's appearance on the block of E. 7th St between Avenues C & D, beginning sometime between late April and mid-May.
