STATEMENT

Deric Carner's art is concerned with the creation and loss of meaning in contemporary existence. He seeks to intervene in the rationalist programming of life by inventing his own rules and self-contained systems. His work is a critical reflection of a bureaucratic and rhetorically rational society. He uses rule-based interactivity and a generic aesthetic that references informational graphics and established systems of objective and authoritative meaning. This fake objectivity is a facade behind which a willfully subjective set of meanings and rules operate. This ruse distances the artwork from the reality of authorship and intention, and allows for an ironic awareness of the artist's role as producer of meaning. The work attempts to provoke viewers to question their role as consumers and legitimizers of meaning.

NOTE

This Generic FUN performance is in no way associated with Martha Stewart Omnimedia, K-mart, or any other commercial enterprise.
